Crime Lab Chicago Sports Alliance

For the first time ever in 2017, the Chicago Bears, Chicago Blackhawks, Chicago Bulls, Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox, operating together as the Chicago Sports Alliance, joined together to lend their broad reach and resources to support efforts to decrease violence in the city. In 2018, the Chicago Sports Alliance confirmed they will donate an additional $1 million in grants to expand these efforts to build a safer Chicago. In 2018, the Alliance will continue supporting high-intensity mentoring program Choose to Change, a program jointly delivered by Children’s Home and Aid and Youth Advocate Programs, and the University of Chicago Crime Lab. The Alliance will also fund, for the first time, READI Chicago (Rapid Employment and Development Initiative), the ambitious 18-month-long transitional job, cognitive behavioral therapy, and training program managed by Heartland Alliance that aims to engage and serve the individuals at most elevated risk for gun violence involvement in Chicago. Working with the Crime Lab, the teams sought to be as evidence-informed as possible, investing in promising, evidence-informed programs and in efforts to generate better evidence to guide policy and practice.

All five teams will continue their individual charitable efforts with the hundreds of organizations they partner with each year across the Chicagoland area. Each team will also engage with the grant recipients throughout the year by providing in-kind support, as well as tapping into the teams’ vast networks of fans and organizational strengths to help bring awareness to the programs.

The Crime Lab is proud to partner with the Chicago Sports Alliance, Choose to Change, and READI Chicago on this important work to reduce violence and build a Chicago that is safe and full of opportunity for all.
